“Though we are poor, we still have our dreams.” I still remember the trembling effect that this statement had on me when I heard it in 1996 on my first trip to the Republic of the Philippines. And in my 30 subsequent visits since, I have come to fully understand that these “dreams” are not limited to the old woman who spoke these words. This country, which is tightly woven from the threads of poverty, has endured so much hardship and suffering, yet the majority of its people awake each day, smiling at the prospects of life. I am humbled each trip.
It is my hope that my efforts on behalf of these resilient and appreciative people will make a small difference. I certainly cannot fix the ills that plague these 7000 islands, but I CAN do something. The Philippines has worked its way into my heart and it will not let go. Nor do I want it to!!!!
So far we have been able to fix schools, rehab and erect churches, secure surgeries for several youngsters, create libraries, and sponsor the educations of eleven high school and college students. I’ve had the opportunity to speak, teach, and entertain thousands over the last 11 years, and I have no intention of backing away now.
I DO need help, though. These projects would not have been possible except for the many contributors who have believed in my efforts. All monies donated go directly to these projects. I assume my own expenses. Should you desire to make a profound difference in the lives of those who so desperately need your help, please make checks payable to LAKEWOOD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH and designate at the bottom “McKnight Philippines Projects.” These donations are tax deductible.
Help me try to make some more dreams come true.
